Neil Bauman - Financial Planner, Insurance Specialist, And Business Guidance Expert
Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I make a financial plan?
Markets contain hundreds of investment choices. A plan gives you a much higher chance of financial success. As a skilled, knowledgeable, and experienced financial planner, Neil will find great plans for your needs and timeline.
A plan also allows you to understand how each financial decision you make affects other areas of your finances. For example, buying a particular investment product might help you save adequately to finance your child’s higher education, or it may provide enough for a comfortable retirement. You can also adapt more easily to life changes and feel more secure that your goals are on track.
What about doing my own financial planning?
Some personal finance software packages, magazines or self-help books can help you do your own financial planning. However, you may decide to seek help from a professional financial planner if:
- You need expertise you don’t possess in certain areas of your finances. For example, a financial planner can help you evaluate the level of risk in your investment portfolio and revise your asset allocation;
- You don’t feel you have the time to spare to do your own financial planning;
- You know that you need to improve your current financial situation but don’t know where to start;
- You feel that a professional financial planner could help you improve on how you are currently managing your finances;
- You have an immediate need or unexpected life event such as an inheritance or major illness;
- You want to get a professional opinion from a trusted and skilled financial planner about the plan you developed for yourself.
What about taxes?
It is important that all your plans are tax efficient. Your financial planner will help you in minimizing your tax liability and maximizing your after-tax returns from your investments. We help you make investment choices that avoid excessive taxes.
After a plan is developed, what's next?
The best plan is useless unless it is put into action. After you have a plan, it would be to implemented. You would stick to it and monitor it to a schedule you create with your financial planner.
How often should I update my plan?
It is good to review the plan when there is a lifestyle change such as marriage, birth, death, or divorce. Any change in financial position should be evaluated as well.
Most clients have an annual review on how the plan is working. The review considers changing goals and circumstances. We check in with clients at a minimum annually. If market conditions change, more contacat may be required.
Will you meet online or on the phone?
We care about the safety and well-being of everyone. We meet people virtually in Skype or Zoom. We will also use the telephone.
If you do wish to meet in person, we provide a safe environment per CDC Guidelines.
What does "We Always Do the Right Thing" mean?
We Always Do The Right Thing means exactly what it says. We TRULY do what is best for the client. Everyone says it, but, many financial planners or professionals in this business do not mean it. We do not have a product of the month. We do not sell products based on the highest commissions. We never pitch proprietary products. All this sounds simple, but, more often than not, unsophisticated investors are led down the wrong path.
What is the nature of most of your business consulting?
Most of our consulting clients are start up businesses, many who have questions on how to begin the process. We advise start-up businesses on the type of entity to setup (corporation, LLC, etc.), insurance polices to obtain ( important when there are partners), and more.
We consult on employees and offering insurance plans for them. We help employers keep their employees longer by offering them high quality, low cost benefits such as Life Insurance, Disability Insurance, and more.
What are examples of exposures you have identified?
A few examples of financial exposures we have helped with include:
- Discovering an improperly setup estate plan that was funded by life insurance that would not cover taxes and expenses for those inheriting the funds.
- A person who was going to sell stock realized that the tax bracket was 47%. That was a very negative exposure. We had to identify and make internal business moves, and accounting measures, that resulted in cutting the tax rate from 47 to 15%.
A surviving spouse inherited millions of dollars with no life insurance. Upon her demise, the children would need to pay a large amount of taxes. The only way to cover taxes and expenses would be to sell the stocks and deplete their portfolios. They would lose 80% of their inheritance. Neil devised a financial plan to protect their stock, and slowly allow the affected parties to divest their interests and improve their portfolio.
What Types of Insurance Do You Offer?
We offer ALL types of insurance for both personal, estate planning, and business needs. Permanent insurance such as Whole Life, Universal Life, and Term insurance as well as Health and Accident, Disability, etc.
Why is there an evaluation of my insurance needs?
In the last 15 years, insurance rates have dropped about in half. This means that today for the same amount of money you have been paying, you can get twice as much insurance.
The other side of this coin is that you can cut your costs in half and retain the same amount of insurance.
It is always a good idea to keep in touch with your insurance provider and make sure that they are providing you with the most cost-effective policies available.
What is a 401K Review?
We take the time to listen and make a determination as to where you are with your 401k plans at our initial meeting, and where you want to be at a particular point in time.
We then create a financial roadmap that shows you several different routes to your retirement goals. We determine your risk tolerance and other market factors to show you different paths to your desired goals.
What is a retirement planning session?
We work with you to determine what you have in place today, and what you will need at retirement age or your timeline. Then we give you several options to achieve that goal with varying degrees of volatility.
